چکیده

The Siluro-Ordovician Southern Uplands terrane occupies a key position in the Caledonian Orogen, yet its genesis is controversial. Marginal basin, back-arc and forearc tectonic regimes, operative at the Laurentian margin of the Iapetus Ocean, have all been invoked. Fresh andesitic detritus within turbidite sandstones has, until now, been assumed to provide evidence for an Ordovician, supra-subduction volcanic arc, a central feature of most models. However, high-precision TIMS U-Pb and laser ablation data for detrital zircons from the sandstone prove Neoproterozoic volcanism at 557±6 Ma (2σ) and 613±12 Ma (2σ). The complex crystallisation history recorded by the zircons shows assimilation of 1043±7 Ma (2σ), Grenvillian basement into the andesite magma. No zircons have been found which overlap the Caradoc depositional age of the host sedimentary rocks, so undermining all extant terrane models. The age profile of the detrital zircons is typical of Gondwana/Avalonia. This has important implications for the palaeogeography of the Iapetus Ocean during the Ordovician, since it requires the introduction of Avalonian detritus into a sedimentary basin marginal to Laurentia.

East-derived sandstones contain a 23 suite of zircons with a mean age of ca 487 Ma that suggests derivation fr...

Regional geochemical comparisons from the Lower Palaeozoic, Southern Uplands – Down-Longford terrane in Northern Ireland and Scotland

Synopsis Newly-acquired regional geochemical data for the Down-Armagh (Northern Ireland) sector of the Southern Uplands – Down-Longford terrane are assessed by comparison with the equivalent dataset for southern Scotland. Despite the much thicker glacigenic cover to the Down-Armagh bedrock, the principal geochemical lineaments identified in the Southern Uplands are still apparent. Patterns of e...

New ideas on the Proterozoic-Early Palaeozoic evolution of NW Iberia: insights from U–Pb detrital zircon ages

U–Pb ages were obtained on single detrital zircon grains separated from six samples of Neoproterozoic and Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary and volcanosedimentary rocks from NW Iberia using the laser ablation microprobe-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) method. Precambrian greywackes yielded abundant zircons with Neoproterozoic (800–640 Ma) and Mesoproterozoic (0.9–1.2 Ga) ag...

Bridging the Gap Between the Foreland and Hinterland I: Geochronology and Plate Tectonic Geometry of Ordovician Magmatism and Terrane Accretion on the Laurentian Margin of New England

U-Pb dates on magmatic and detrital zircon from samples in the hinterland of the Taconic orogen place new constraints on the timing and plate tectonic geometry of terrane accretion and magmatic arc activity. The Moretown terrane, a Gondwanan-derived exotic block, extends from the Rowe Schist-Moretown Formation contact in the west to the Bronson Hill arc in the east. Arc-related plutonic and vol...
